Kinja'd!!!

This flew into our !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! last night. A giant cockroach. It’s body was at least 3 inches long. I had Daddy go after it with a flip-flop. He smashed it on the wall and scooped it up with a folder, then it was flushed down the toilet.

ALSO: Screw kinja. It completely botched my image orientation.

EDIT: Now the image appears to be in correct orientation.

Palmetto bugs are in the cockroach order.

I should also add that 3” is a bit bigger than Palmettos usually get.

Palmetto bugs are cockroaches.

Also, criticizing an Oppo for referring to his father as Daddy? I feel that a comment about glass houses is in order here.

Haha, sorry. :-P

I’m in Maui right now. The owners of the rental house we are staying at has a guide book on how to deal with different insects/bugs that enter the house. Accord to them it is a cockroach, and they fly in from the fields.

IT HAS NOT BEEN SEEN AGAIN. Of course it would have been the best to burn the house down, but this is a rental property.

I am jellin hard right now. I would take either Hawaii or a cool house right now, and both might make me pass out from relaxation.

I know palmetto bugs are cockroaches, but they are not your ordinary cockroach. And I wasnt criticizing him, the grammar of that sentence seemed a little screwy to me and I wasnt quite sure what I had read. That and Im incredibly tired so my reading comprehension is pretty much non existent right now.

Exaaactly!

This is my first time encountering cockroaches of this high degree.

Before this I was unaware cockroaches could fly!!

I had one on my wall not too long ago. Scared the shit out of me, because I’ve watched those exterminator shows. Luckily, they don’t actually like to LIVE in houses, because they eat rotting trees.

I had one of these land on my shirt while I was riding a moped. Luckily did not cause an accident.

Oh my! That sounds terrifying. Glad to hear it did not cause an accident. If it happened to me, I probably would have crashed. Did it happen on any of the Hawaiian islands?

Man, I’m glad I live in a country without flying cockroaches. Trying to kill all those land borne buggers is enough for me

Yeah never saw them so big ‘till we moved to south Florida. They are easier to kill than the small German’s up north. Cat’s hunt them down pretty good too.

Definitely a Palmetto bug. The good thing is that, unlike German cockroaches, they don’t want to be in your house. If they end up inside, it is because they took a wrong turn somewhere and would just like to be let out. The German cockroaches are looking for a place to live....

I don’t think this actually got killed from the initial impact, but rather stunned. It was twitching around on the folder he scooped it up with. Although I am pretty certain it is dead now. I don’t think these have water skills.

I haven’t seen one since, thankfully. I don’t know if it’s different here on Hawaii, but they say they fly in from the fields...

Ah yes... they do take a beating. I should have said they aren’t as fast as the German roaches.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > Alex B
07/23/2015 at 12:44

Kinja'd!!!0

God yes. I first encountered them when I moved to Houston. In addition to all the millions of little brown German roaches, we had these massive flying fuckers. Once, I had one in my apartment and tried to kill it with Raid ant and roach spray. The bastard just laughed at me. So I got the wasp and hornet spray. He died.

I get these regularly in my house in Austin. I think they come in through the garage. You can make a paste containing borax that is harmless to humans but kills the roaches. You can also buy pills to place around that they eat and die.

These things freak me the hell out, and I kill them with extreme prejudice.

They can still fly, assuming you’re talking about the kind I’m used to. They can’t lift themselves, but I’ve seen one jump off my bathroom counter and glide across the room in a terrifying brown blur.

Kinja'd!!! Rainbow > TheRealBicycleBuck

Not true! When it’s cold and wet outside, they stay outside. But in the heat of the summer, they migrate into houses. Usually they live inside the walls and only come out if you go on vacation or something. They’re as scared of people as people are of them, though, so that’s why they’re not terribly common inside of an active house.

We have these and they don’t have any wings.
